The thyroid is a gland situated at the front of the neck responsible for producing hormones and controlling the metabolism and heart rate. A thyroidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the entire thyroid gland while a parathyroidectomy is the removal of only part of the gland.
A thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy may be advised in the following cases:
If a thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy is advised, Dr Ross will explain the surgery to you in detail before you are put under general anaesthesia. In most cases, Dr Ross will take a laparoscopic approach to surgery. If this is the case, a small puncture-like incision is made in the throat, and a thin tube-like instrument fitted with a light and camera at the end is passed through these incisions. This instrument will allow your surgeon to visualise the internal organs without the need for larger incisions and unnecessary scars. Through these small incisions, the laparoscope can be used to remove the entire or part of the thyroid gland.
In some cases, open surgery may be needed, but if this is the case, Dr Ross will explain to you why. This involves a larger incision being made near the collar bone to perform the thyroidectomy or parathyroidectomy.
Naturally, upon waking from anaesthesia, you can expect some initial pain in the neck and throat. Your surgeon will prescribe painkilling medication to relieve any discomfort. You will need to remain in the hospital for observation for the next day or two, and you may experience difficulty chewing and swallowing as well as a hoarse voice for a few days. Your nurses will discuss caring for your incision and wounds at home, and when you should see your surgeon for a follow-up. After you have been discharged, you should be sure to contact Dr Ross should any symptoms of infection such as fever, pussing and vomiting, present themselves.REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT
